A Message from Our CEO
Agnico Eagle’s mission is to build a high quality, easy to understand business — one that generates superior long-term returns for our shareholders, creates a great place to work for our employees, and contributes positively to the communities in which we operate.
These simple but inspiring words have been key to Agnico Eagle’s success for more than 60 years. They have guided our growth from one mine to eight and our transformation into one of the world’s best-performing companies.
And they will guide Agnico Eagle as we expand production, explore new frontiers and work together to build a sustainable future.
In an increasingly complex world, our mission is clear — meeting society’s demand for metals to the benefit of our shareholders, employees and operating communities.
Our mission was front and centre in 2017 as we began building our new mining platform in Nunavut, in Canada’s remote north, which is set to begin production in the second quarter of 2019. With more than 1,000 employees and contractors moving around the construction site, it was imperative to ensure the safe and responsible development of the Amaruq and Meliadine deposits.
I am pleased to report that our safety performance in Nunavut and across Agnico Eagle’s operations in 2017 was outstanding. It was, in fact, the seventh year in a row we have recorded our lowest number of accidents, even as our workforce grew by almost 11%. Two of our sites, La India and Lapa, achieved exceptional safety performance, with no lost-time accidents or restricted work assignments during the year.
Our 2017 sustainable development report provides further insight into our health and safety programs — including the growing importance of mental health and wellness in our daily work lives.
It also highlights our investments in: the health and socio-economic wellbeing of our operating communities; research that has led to the reduction of our environmental footprint; and, underground technology that is making our mines safer and more productive.
We take time, as well, to reflect on the long-term employment opportunities we offer to our mining communities, providing important financial and educational support to families. In some of our remote communities, we are also contributing to a whole new standard of living.
In each of these endeavours, it is our skilled workforce, and our next generation of leaders, who are creating the type of value that has kept our company in business for over 60 years.
I thank all employees for their hard work and dedication. It is your willingness to challenge workplace ideas and conventional thinking which has allowed Agnico Eagle to renew our business over and over again.
With your support, we will continue to fulfill our obligations to society, to our shareholders and our operating communities and ultimately do what is right for our business.
