UN SDG 6: Clean Water and Sanitation
Ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all
Agnico Eagle’s water management program is based on three key elements: maintaining water quality in the receiving environment, collaborating with our communities of interest to ensure the fair allocation of water and using water efficiently.
Working for a Sustainable Future:
We are committed to the safe and environmentally responsible development, operation and management of tailings storage facilities. We maintain site-specific Tailings Management Systems that conform to industry standards of best practice.
At our Kittila mine in Finland, we have built a 19-M€ water treatment facility to decrease sulfate concentrations in the water released to the environment. Kittila completed its first full year of operation at the plant, successfully achieving our goal to reduce the amount of sulfate in the effluent to the nearby Seurujoki River.
We are committed to reducing the level of contaminants released to the environment beyond current regulations. At our LaRonde mine, we retrofitted two reactors at the biological treatment plant to reduce nitrate level in the effluent. This has already led to a 15% to 20% drop in nitrate levels and we expect to eventually reach a reduction between 20% and 40%.
We continuously work to optimize our water use and minimize our impact. In 2017, for example, we recycled 71% of all water used at our operations. We have also developed site-specific water balances for each of our operations.
