UN SDG 3: Good Health and Well-Being
Ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages
The health and safety of our employees and contractors is core value and of paramount importance to Agnico Eagle. Our goal is to ensure our workforce has the knowledge, tools and training they need to perform their duties in an optimal and safe manner.
Working for a Sustainable Future:
Agnico Eagle aims to have zero accidents in the workplace and more and more, it is clear that optimal mental health is vital to achieving this goal.
We encourage employees to speak up about their mental health and wellness, as we seek to improve awareness about the importance and benefits of healthy minds at work.
To gain further insight into employees’ needs, in 2017 we began following statistics from our Employee Assistance Program (EAP) in Canada more closely. While the program is confidential, it is clear that employees are increasingly availing themselves of EAP services – with employee use rising from 8% in 2013 to 12% in 2017 – and the overall reaction to the mental health awareness program has been very positive.
We have launched a training initiative for our supervisors to ensure they have the tools to recognize the signs and symptoms of an employee dealing with mental health and stress issues – helping the individual understand the professional resources and options available to help them through the EAP and via anonymous professional-help phone lines. We also our customize training to local needs. Nurses in Nunavut, for example, are adapting mental health training and awareness to consider the stresses and isolation of a 2-week fly-in fly-out schedule and the cultural needs and differences of Inuit employees. Our Goldex mine in Quebec recently received external certification of its Healthy Workplace Program – the first mine in Quebec to achieve this designation.
